Mr. Tomas E. Monell is the Office Chief for Innovation, Science and Technology for USSOUTHCOM J2. He serves as a senior advisor to the J2 for innovation, open-source collection, and academic outreach. Previously, he has served as the SCJ2 Deputy for Resources, SCJ2 Chief of Staff, and as the SCJ2 Chief of Intelligence Engagements Division. Previous DIA assignments also include: Deputy DIA Forward Element (DFE) for USSOUTHCOM, and Intelligence Planner for USSOUTHCOM priority plans. Born in Killeen, Texas, he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and graduated as a Distinguished Military Graduate from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez Campus. Mr. Monell has also earned three Master’s Degrees: Disaster Management from Florida International University, Global Affairs with a Graduate Certificate in National Security Studies from Florida International University, and Organizational Management from the University of Phoenix. Mr. Monell’s vast experience in intelligence ranges from analysis to operations in the public and private sector. Mr. Monell retired from the U.S. Army in the rank of Lieutenant Colonel after 23 years of commissioned service as an intelligence officer.
