Pankaj Agrawal, MD, is the chief of the Division of Neonatology at Jackson Health System and Project New Born distinguished chair at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics. He is the principal investigator for the Virtual Genome Center in Infant Health (VIGOR) Project, funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He has received multiple NIH grants, including several R01s* as a principal investigator, and is a member of Society of Pediatric Research and American Pediatric Society. Dr. Agrawal served on study sections for NIH’s National Human Genome Research Institute and NIAMS. He has also had more than 150 articles published in journals, such as The New England Journal of Medicine, The Journal of Clinical Investigation, and The American Journal of Human Genetics. He closely works with various NIH- and philanthropy-funded projects on rare disease gene discovery, undiagnosed disorders in infants and children, and the role of genomics in neonatal care and research. Dr. Agrawal came to Miami in early 2023 from Boston Children’s Hospital, where he was the director of the Neonatal Genomic Program, which is focused on understanding the role of genomic technologies in newborn care and screening. He was also the medical director of the hospital’s Manton Center for Gene Discovery, where he worked to determine the genetic and molecular bases of various rare and unexplained conditions. Dr. Agrawal earned his medical degree from the University and Government Medical College in Baroda, India. He completed a pediatric residency at Sir Sayajirao General Hospital and a senior residency in neonatology at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, also in India. Dr. Agrawal was a resident and senior resident in newborn medicine at Monash Medical Centre in Australia, and a clinical fellow in pediatrics at Boston Children’s and Harvard Medical School. He also completed a master’s degree in medical science from Harvard Medical School. Dr. Agrawal joined the faculty at Boston Children’s after his fellowship, where he worked for more than 20 years.
