Professor Gabriela Gongora-Svartzman is an Associate Teaching and the Director of Computing Programs for Khoury College of Computer Science at the Miami Campus, Northeastern University. Originally from Mexico City, Mexico Dr. Gongora-Svartzman was one of the few women in her engineering class, an experience that shaped her commitment to breaking down barriers in academia. She has since taught at Columbia University, Carnegie Mellon University, and Stevens Institute of Technology, where she developed innovative approaches to data science, machine learning, and computing education. Her research focuses on ethical machine learning applications, particularly in climate change, urban decision-making, and data visualization for social impact. She is also exploring the role of Generative AI in student learning and advancing ethical methodologies in urban data analysis. Beyond her research and teaching, Dr. Gongora-Svartzman is actively involved in initiatives like the Grace Hopper Celebration, Tapia Conference, and INFORMS, promoting belongingness in technological fields and inspiring people to pursue careers in computing. At Northeastern University, she continues her mission to empower students through inclusive education, innovative pedagogy, and real-world applications of computing, shaping the next generation of tech leaders.
