Avinash (Avi) Patwardhan, PhD, BCEEM, is Managing Director of the Smart Cities Practice at Jacobs, where he focuses on looking for ways to optimize the use of local natural resources and appropriate technologies to minimize carbon footprints. Dr. Patwardhan collaborates with experts in solid waste, renewable energy, solar energy, integrated water management, among others, to develop technology implementation roadmaps. He shares his knowledge with his clients and colleagues to develop some of the world’s most innovative projects, such as Masdar City, which will be the world’s first planned carbon-neutral city, as well as the Shendra-Bidkin Smart City program in India. Dr. Patwardhan’s passion is spotlighting how emerging technologies are impacting cities, utilities and organizations as they plan, build, and manage infrastructure assets. Using time-honored best practices and cutting-edge technologies from different business sectors and geographies around the globe, Dr. Patwardhan has spent his career helping to dramatically improve the quality of life for hundreds of thousands of people—from water resource allocation, sustainability planning, smart and connected place transformations, economic development, and real time asset management. His track record includes more than 50 clients in North America and overseas—both in the public (local, state and federal) and private sectors. He has a doctorate in Bio-Systems Engineering from the University of Minnesota, a master’s in Agricultural Engineering from University of Manitoba, Canada, is a board-certified environmental engineer, and a professional hydrologist. Dr. Patwardhan holds two U.S. patents for Water Quality Trading & Method System for Evaluating Water Usage.
