Willy Orozco

Regional Manager + President, Microsoft TEALS / CSTA Miami

Willy is the South Florida Regional Manager for the Microsoft Philanthropies Program TEALS and President of CSTA Miami. With TEALS he helps build sustainable computer science (CS) programs in high schools with a focus on serving students excluded from learning CS because of race, gender and geography, and classroom teachers to learn to teach CS on their own by pairing them with industry volunteers and proven curricula. With CSTA Miami he focuses on building the community of CS educators and improving CS education in general. These combined efforts have allowed him to:

– Multiply TEALS reach and impact by 3 times since its inception in Miami.
– Facilitate TEALS expansion into Broward and Palm Beach Counties.
– Increase CSTA teacher participation.
– Create multiple professional development opportunities for teachers.
– Help stablish CS Honor Societies at schools.
– Create hackathon opportunities for students.
– Collaborate with multiple leaders in CS education in the state.

Prior to joining TEALS, Willy was the Chair of the Engineering and Computer Science department at one of the most prominent independent schools in South Florida. He earned his bachelor in Earth Science Education from FIU and has a Level 2 Google Educator Certification. As a member of the Enabling The Future community, Willy had the privilege to 3D print prosthetic hands for kids in Bolivia and England. He is also a Magic Wheelchair builder. These volunteering efforts helped Willy on his approach to education, which focuses on problem-solving skills, human interaction, and the understanding that all subjects in STEAM are interconnected. This work also led him to earn the 2017 Chamber South Volunteer Appreciation Award.

Willy lives in Miami, FL with his wife Yvy, son Mateo, daughter Luna Mia, two dogs, Lobo and Peppa, and Lizzy, a bearded dragon.
