Florida House of Representatives
Kionne L. McGhee, is a Democratic member of the Florida House of Representatives, representing the 117th District, which includes central Miami-Dade County, stretching from Richmond Heights to Florida City, since 2012 and has been subsequently reelected. He also serves as current Chairman of the Miami-Dade County Legislative Delegation.
State Representative McGhee is a Miami native, national motivational speaker, college professor, and author. He attended Howard University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science in 2000. Shortly after, he enrolled and earned his Juris Doctorate degree from Thurgood Marshall School of Law. After graduating, McGhee wrote his memoir “A Mere I Can is American,” and began working for the Miami Dade County State Attorney’s Office under State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle as an Assistant State Attorney.
In 2010 he was awarded the Florida Self-Sufficiency Award and was recognized by AT&T and Miami Herald as one of Miami’s Rising Voices. He was also selected by the Miami New Times as one of Miami’s most interesting people of 2017.
As a State Representative, Mr. McGhee serves on the Appropriations Committee; Commerce Committee; Transportation & Tourism Appropriations Subcommittee; Children, Families & Seniors Subcommittee; and Insurance & Banking Subcommittee. He was also elected by his peer in the Democratic Caucus to serve as the House Minority Leader for the upcoming 2019-20 Legislative Sessions.
In addition, he is a member of the Trial Lawyers Association and Wilkie D. Ferguson Bar Association. He is also a mentor for the 500 Role Models of Excellence, and the founder of Young Advocates Leading by Example (Y.A.L.E) a nonprofit organization.
