President, Microsoft Latin America
As President of Microsoft Latin America, César Cernuda oversees a business which includes six subsidiaries with over 2,500 employees and 80,000 business partners. He is responsible for all of Microsoft’s products, services and support offerings across Latin America and accelerating the company’s current transformation to being the leading productivity and platform company for the mobile-first, cloud-first era. A key area of focus for Cernuda is to enable Microsoft’s customers in Latin America to accelerate their business growth, as they embark on their own journey of digital transformation.
Prior to his current role, Cernuda was the President of Microsoft Asia Pacific. In this role he was responsible for 12 subsidiaries in 39 territories and countries, with over 13,500 employees and 100,000 partners. He lead the company’s commercial and consumer products, and service and support offerings to meet Asia Pacific’s aggressive consumption of cloud, mobile, big data and social technologies. His key task was to guide Microsoft’s current transformation from a primarily on-premise software business to a mobile-first, cloud-first company.
Latin America is familiar territory for Cernuda, since he previously was vice president of Sales, Marketing and Services for Microsoft in the region. In this role, he was responsible for managing the overall business in the region. He drove commercial and consumer marketing strategies, in addition to services and business processes to support Microsoft’s business units and partners. Under his tenure, the Microsoft Latin America Area Headquarters won the Alfred P. Sloan Award for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility in 2011 as a result of use of a flexible and effective workplace strategy to increase business and employee success. In 2012, Cernuda was invited to the Microsoft Executive Bench, a distinct honor given to a select number of top Microsoft executives.
He also served as the worldwide vice president of Microsoft Business Solutions sales and field operations. He oversaw the Microsoft ERP & CRM business worldwide. He was a member of the executive board managing the Worldwide Dynamics division and worked directly with the product teams to ensure subsidiaries were supported to meet their goals and drive customer satisfaction. He was also the highest-level executive responsible for sales performance.
Before taking that position, Cernuda was vice president of Microsoft Business Solutions International, taking care of sales and marketing business worldwide, except North America. He was responsible for sales, presales, channel, marketing, product, support and services. During this time, he was a member of the Microsoft International executive board.
Cernuda was also general manager for Microsoft Business Solutions Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA). He also held several positions at EMEA headquarters, including as director of Small and Midmarket Solutions & Partner group. In this role, he worked on the merger between the former Navision A/S and Microsoft Corp. and led the licensing compliance management. He joined Microsoft Spain in 1997, where he led the SMEs group for Spain launching bCentral, an online Web services portal. This was awarded as best product of the year in Spain and best internal worldwide initiative at Microsoft.
He started his career in the banking industry, working on the launch of Banco 21 (currently known as Banco Gallego). He later joined Software AG, where he successfully developed a new business channel for the company’s products and services sales. He also ran the financial sector division for Spain and Portugal.
Cernuda earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Marketing from ESIC University in Spain, and completed a Management Development Program (PDD) from IESE Business School at the University of Navarra in Spain. In 2014, Cernuda was recognized as one of the top 100 most influential Spaniards in the world through the ‘100 Españoles’ award. This is given to recognize Spaniards overseas who have shown exemplary successes in their respective professions. He was also awarded the “Asturian of the Month” by La Nueva España (independent newspaper in Asturias) in 2010 and Best Executive of the Year in 2011 by Emprendedores Magazine in Spain. Cernuda is an Honorary Patron of Plataforma Solidaria de Asturias, a foundation that helps with the education and needs of a group of children in Bolivia. In May 2012, Cernuda completed the ‘Leadership for Senior Executives’ program offered by Harvard’s Business School.
Outside of work, Cernuda and his wife enjoy spending family time with their two children.
